Jan responds:

I live on a small farm - with pastures, a pond, woods, and livestock.

Commercial ranchers needing to control predators on livestock and farmers
needing to control bugs on crops are very different issues from individuals
who want to shoot reptiles. This comparison requires no additional
discussion.

Every year I (along with several other local NANFA members) perform reptile
education shows for scouts, camps, and schools. We emphasize the intrinsic
and environmental value of these animals. We stress the need to appreciate
and protect them from those who see them as "varmints."

I have no criteria for "justifiable varminticide." During the past 30 years
of fieldwork, I have never encountered an animal that had less of a right to
be in his habitat than me.

Well, I think it CAN be. You live in a nice suburban home, and I live in a
nice
rural home. We both appreciate the wild residents, venomous and
nonvenomous, of
our respective homes and properties. But we don't make a living off of that
land. If we follow your (and Ty's) argument to a logical conclusion, then
it is
unethical for farmers to use pesticides. If you raise livestock then you
shouldn't shoot predators. These organisms have a prior claim to the land
that
you now inhabit.

I don't think that's what you really mean, but you didn't specify any
criteria
for justifiable varminticide.
