Maybe you are changeing the water too often, unless you are aging your water
before hand. If you have room I highly recommend it. I also add homemade
black water extract to give the water a nice brown tint ( I keep swamp
dwelling fish). I bubble the water to keep it from becoming stagnant. To
fill the tanks from the barrel I use a 500 gph pump ( a little small, but
cheaper) and run it through the same kind of hose you would use on a siphon.

I think I am saying the same thing Todd just mentioned. The best medicine is
simplicity.

Another stressor on crappie is lack of cover. Also turning down the
lighting and wrapping most of the tank in black plastic or paper even. Leave
a small viewing hole in front. Crappie are most comfortable in low light.
