The October Smithsonian Magazine has a couple of really nice articles.

One is called Supergerm Warfare and is about the very topic of late--
drug-resistant bacteria. It's an excerpt from the book "Killers Within:
The Deadly Rise of Drug-Resistant Bacteria". Scary reading about drug use
and testing and approval, and it tosses out some ideas about the possible
value of bacteria resistant animals like Komodo dragons and the African
clawed frog.

The second is California Scheming, about the draining of the Owens Valley
to provide water to Los Angeles. It's a historical look at the movers and
shakers and water wars and more. It would make a great Hollywood script
except there's no happy ending (well, a small one).
