Back in the summer of '98, I worked for KS Dept of Wildlife and Parks
teaching kids how to fish. Before we would turn the kids loose, we
gave a half-hour speech on various topics (fish ID, fish biology,
aquatic ecology). Some of the things we would ask included habitat
questions (where would you find fish), what they can do to help out
(ie - provide habitat), and "Give a hoot, don't pollute" type stuff
(ie - take a plastic six-pack ring and a plastic fish replica and
demonstrate what can happen). Also, kids are always amazed at how
much life lives in one jar of pond water. Dump a little "SloGo"
(immersion oil) and pond life on a slide to demonstrate how oil
pollution can affect aquatic critters.
