Never is a long time.

While I don't go to quite the extreme that you do Todd, I have grown
vallisneria in red flint gravel for as long as I have kept fish. I am
just too dang lazy to measure water parameters, but I know that my fish
do very well in this setup.

Expect for my darters. Val just doesn't fit in the envirotype.

And man, do I have troubles with algae in that tank.

I do wish that I had a LFS that would buy my val. I throw out handfuls
of the stuff every few months.
