I have noticed a very slight coloration like the one you described, but
only around the lateral area close to the gill slits. Its only noticeable
after observed very carefuly, though. But do you know the spwning methos of
blacksides? This is way off topic, but do you know if it will make a
difference if the netting color for a dip net used in riffles will scare
the darters out of the net quicker? The only color netting available was pink
fabric from a craft store, lol.
