Well, how about a few late entries.
The dust bowl during The Great Depression
Owens Valley, Mono Lake (City County and State of LA)
There also used to be a vast, shallow, fish laden lake in the California
Central Valley. Completely Gone, except briefly after the recent flood.

Thanks to all who responded to my call for nominees. For those who
don't
know, the Aral Sea in Central Asia (within the borders of the former
USSR)
was once the 4th largest inland lake (in volume,and 2nd to Lake Superior
in
area) in the world, and supported a huge fishery.
