You are right, but a smaller, less effective variation can be resorted to
when you are by yourself. I have done this successfully using either a small
seine or a larger sturdy dip net. You can walk across the riffles and at a
likely spot place the net tight to the bottom down stream as far as you can
reach and then shuffle your feet through the stones towards the net. A few
fish between you and the net can usually be caught this way -- especially
darters.
