I took a new NANFA member , Doug, collecting yesterday. he is new to the
whole deal. He wanted to get some iowa darters and stone rollers to add to
his darter tank. We started in the marsh and managed to get several female
iowas, along with madtoms, and blacknose shiners. Then we went upland to
Puff creek and tried to get some banded darters and stone rollers. oddly,
there were no fish to be caught other than a hog sucker, common shiners,
pumpkinseed, and rock bass, but we did manage to get two stone rollers.
this was good, but we still needed male iowa darters. We stopped back at
some other sights in the marsh, to no avail, several species of dace,
sticklebacks, mudminnows, bullheads, madtoms, and blacknose shiners. On the
way back we stopped at the hole that yeilded the female iowas, and did
manage to get some males. it was very windy, with gust reaching 40 mph,
plus in the upper 40s to low 50s it was still better than staying home, I
agree!
