NANFA-- Turtles wintering in a pond

A friend of mine has an ornamental pond about 14' x 14'. Besides Koi and
natives, he introduced several small local turtles. The problem I see coming
up is winter and he has a gravel bottom over an old pool liner. I have
suggested to him that he may need to put some containers of mud in the
deepest part of the pond so the turtles would have something to bury
themselves in.

Will this probably work? Any better ideas?
