I winter my darters at between 40 and 62 F and Java fern will take those
temps. One time my tanks got down to 35 F the fish were not moving much but
they survived. I don't see why your out door method wouldn't work. Mine
color up in the spring but never quite to the extent that the wild ones do,
maybe diet? Good luck
