I have a breeding pair of "Stone" catfish. The person who gave them to me
simply referred to them as "Stone" cats. After doing some research, I believe
them to be either Noturus flavus or possibly Noturus insignis. Since I live
near the Susquehanna river in York County, PA , I'm leaning toward them being
N. insignis. How do I tell the difference? The Pennsylvania Fishes site
though good, really doesn't give you distinguishing features.
I have had them about three years in an outdoor ornamental pond and this year
there are numerous offspring. I must find homes for these and would like to at
least know their correct identity. There simply is not enough room in my pond
for all these catfish any ideas beside a local quarry. Don't worry I will not
release them in the river!
As a native plant enthusiast I also wanted native fish in my pond. It's a
pleasure to see a site devoted to native fish. I'm eager to learn more!
No Koi for me,
Sharon
