perhaps you could make 2 braces and offset them from the center. 1/2" 0r 1"
aluminum or galvanized metal strips you could then bend over the ends thus
clasping / clamping the sides of the tank's top.

otherwise i would worry about removing the brace. when filled the glass would
be extra stressed and maybe POP at the slightest jarring. what a mess.

i like that metal halide ripple effect to... looks like intense sunlight in
the carribean!
