It depends on the type of aquarium you have. As stated, the older aquariums
have thicker plate glass instead of the newer tanks which are made from
thinner tempered glass. If it is a newer aquarium, it would probably be
safer to construct a decent frame made out of wood or fiberglass. You will
of course have to do some creative strengthening for the front and back to
reduce the amount of bow. It depends on how much effort you want to put into
making the brace. I think the best suggestion so far has been to use the
strip of glass and silicone as a cross brace. It is easiest and can take
the heat from the metal halide bulb. The aquarium companies will cover
their butts and say the brace is necessary, of course.
