Jan,

I have a 33 gallon Rubbermaid plastic garbage container that operates as the
only filter on our outdoor fish pond. It is a simply built design that
includes two separate layers of different sized gravel with a center 3 or 4"
PVC pipe that is fed by a submersible pump. The PVC pipe is positioned in the
center of the container, the pump dumps water straight down to the bottom of
the container. The water then is in a reverse flow through first the coarser
grade of gravel and then through the finer grade of gravel, through an outflow
at the top of the container and back into the pond.

If you'd like a sketch of this let me know. I can fax it to you.

Materials are all relatively cheap and can be picked up at your local Home
Depot, Lowe's, local Hardware stores, etc.

It keeps our outdoor pond very clear and the fish are happy too.
