AQUARIST POSITION

Dauphin Island Sea Lab is seeking an aquarist for The Estuarium.

Title: Aquarist I (trainee)

General Job Description: Work involves the collection and husbandry of
aquatic and marine specimens, as well as the design, fabrication,
maintenance and appearance of the exhibits within the Estuarium at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Aquarist I is expected to learn and understand the
professional practices of public aquarium husbandry, including environmental
requirements, water quality, life support equipment, nutrition, quarantine
procedures, disease recognition and treatments, as
well as the constuction and maintenance of the exhibits. The successful
applicant will also collect plants and animals from a variety of habitats in
the Mobile Bay area, as well as interact with the general public(including
children of all ages) and other duties as assigned/required.

Qualifications: 1-3 years experience, preferred but not required,
maintaining display aquaria systems, both fresh and salt water. Must be able
to negotiate constricted spaces, heavy displays and lift fifty pounds. Must
have basic mechanical skills and the ability to trouble-shoot problems. Will
have to perform well under duress typical of positions dealing with living
organisms and work well with staff and supervisors. The ability to plan,
organize, and implement projects and interact with the general public
(including children of all ages) is also required. Possession of a valid
drivers license. Must be willing to
work some weekends and holidays.

Education Requirements: B.S. in biology or related discipline, or equivalent
combination of education and experience.

Other qualifications that would assist in this job: Strong background in
fresh and salt water fauna and flora of Estuarine Ecosystems. Boat handling
ability, fishing experience and mechanical skills. SCUBA certification and
recent dive experience.
