Hello all.
I received no reply to my first message, so I'll reframe the scope of my question.
Do any of you live in any of the southern U.S. states of the Gulf Coastal Plain? If so, have any of you ever seen any unusually large "grass shrimp" or "crayfish" of peculiar aspect? If so, you may be aquainted with one of the larger freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium spp.). Please feel free to share personal accounts.
I am particularly interested in your experiences with M. carcinus (the bigclaw or painted river prawn), North America's largest freshwater invertebrate (males to over 600 mm total length), but all replies are welcome.
Images of M. carcinus may be accessed-in-http://www.crusta10.de/templates/index.php?sideid=galerie&showthumb=243&lang_id=1&showid=36, http://ti.racoon.free.fr/picture.php?cat=52&image_id=1527&expand=all, http://www.wirbellose.de/arten.cgi?action=show&artNo=138, and http://www.wirbellose.de/arten.cgi?action=show&artNo=084. Note the broad range of coloration.
Once more, thanks for your consideration.
