When I made a river tank I used a powerhead with 3/4 pvc running the length
of the tank. The end of the PVC had 1/4 inch holes drilled through for
about 4 inches and a round sponge filter that was made to fit over 1/4 inch
tube. That way it drew water from the other end of the tank. There is a
drawing of this in my AC article on breeding Dusky darters.
