Hi Rick,

Do you have a Fishes of TN handy? I don't unfortunately, it's-in-school.
Anyway from memory...

Without holding it in my hands, I certainly wouldn't rule out fatlips minnow
(P. crassilabrium), regardless of wether you're in the North or South Fork or
not. You might have a new species record. Stargazers have much more
laterally compressed heads, even if it is Pimephales.

Might also be an "ecomorph" of Erimystax, either the gravel or streamline
chubs. I was suprised-in-how complete the lateral stripe was in the Duck.
May be the same story throughout the TN River.

Subject: NANFA-L-- unknown minnow

Hey,

For a number of years I've been catching a minnow out of the North Fork
Holston River in northeast Tennessee, part of the Tennessee River Drainage
system. I've always called these Blotched Chubs, because I know I've
collected Blotched Chubs from this river before-in-the site where these are
found and they do look a lot like Blotched Chubs. Problem is that they don't
look quite like the Blotched Chubs I rememeber collectiing here back in the
70's. They don't really have blotches, but rather a solid black stripe along
the lateral line. They actually look more like Phenacobius uranops (the only
Phenacobius found in this river), but not quite because they are much fatter
than the Phenacobius I remember catching here before. They look kindof
inbetween a Blotched Chub and a Stargazing Minnow (Phenacobius). Here is a
link to a photo:

would be appreciated.

Rick
