I used to find them in Lake Erie and the Maumee River when I was a kid.
There didn't seem to be any consistency to the habitat. I think you would
want to look in holes and deeper pools with slow water. Probably will
depend more on the size of the population in the waters you are fishing.
We found a few 4-6 inchers in the Maumee last spring. The water was at
flood and the fish were in areas that would normally be dry. I think they
were looking for shelter from the swift water. We were seining in runs
that went through brush and grass near shore. I kept a couple. They had
some fascinating leeches whose color mimiced (sp) the silvery, reflective
color of the drum (sheephead). I didn't pay any special attention to them
and they declined and eventually got ich or something like it. Lost them.
I was having problems with that tank, so I don't know if the fish are
sensitive or if the tank was out of wack.

The ones I caught as a kid in the Maumee were taken in pools immediately
below a dam.
