Well crabs seem to be pretty well able to exist in almost any environment
from fresh to salt water in extremes of temperature and water quality. Not
the say that they will reproduce there but they can survive. The only factor
that seems to matter is food supply. In Texas, blue crabs can be found in
almost every type of water condition. From the high temperature outlet
waters of generating plants to the pouluted waters of the ship channel. As
mentioned they can survive in freshwater and the high salinity areas of
Laguna Madre. Even with the heavy crabbing pressure, crabs seem to be
abundant if somewhat smaller than those from protected waters. Some local
crabbers have taken to holding crabs in cages and feeding them cull fish
from shrimpers to encourage growth. They then sell them right after they
shed. Soft shell crab is an expensive pleasure for souther diners.
