I have had backyard ponds for over 50 years and the only time I have had
winter kills was when leaves blew in and they rotted under the ice. I now
build a tent-like frame and cover it with netting each Fall before the leaves
come down. I have never used aeration. But, i am only wintering over goldfish
and bullfrogs.
