Travis -

My guess is that Pennak excluded aquatic insects in his 3rd edition chiefly
to avoid overlap with new edition of Merritt and Cummins' "Aquatic Insects
of North America." Also, a modern taxonomic AND natural history update for
all aquatic invertebrate groups would be an extraordinary (and possibly,
undoable) amount of work for a single individual.

I recommend Pennak's 2nd edition. Original editions are very common, but
due to their age (they were published in 1953), nomenclature is way
out-of-date. The second edition is also readily available, not too
expensive (I checked and found one for $30 at Bibliofind - you can find
dust-jacketed copies in bookstores sometimes for less), and the taxonomy is
not too dated. Also, it covers all groups and is very well written!

Subject: NANFA-- Pennak's Invert Book

To Jan and others who have previously mentioned Pennak's "Freshwater
Invertebrates of the United States"-

I would like to buy a copy of this book, but am confused by the way in
which some of the later editions seem to include only certain groups,
awaiting further volumes which would complete the coverage of the various
families not already covered (i.e. the 3rd ed. and possibly the 2nd).

What I'm really trying to get at is, what edition(s) covered all families?

I realize the ideal would be to buy the in print edition and wait for the
next volume to come out, but I don't have $110 to spend on the first volume
alone. Hopefully someday I will.

Thanks for your help.

Respects,
