I'm with Jay. Kayaks are the answer anyplace there is a swell or a current.
You sit lower, so they are more stable. They are the easiest thing to
paddle (row). If you are really good and buff you can upright an overturned
kayak without leaving your seat. There is much less chance of getting
swamped.
