Plant in containers and isolate the deep rooted plants from the plenum. I do
this anyway to apply proper soil and fertilizer directly to the plants and
not to the aquarium in general.

thickness and knowing some basics about how meristems of root grow i would
think that they avoid the highly anerobic areas when they start to come into
contact with a chemical environment they dislike, which is know to happen.
any minor permeation would allow in some anerobic aerobic mixing which is
not necessarily a bad thing.
