Because name changes can be frequent and controversial, some writers just
cite a single recent comprehensive authority and state that their
nomenclature conforms to that reference. There are two references often
used for this purpose.

The American Fisheries Society has a Committee on Names of Fishes which
oversees the publication "Common and Scientific Names of Fishes from the
United States and Canada." This reference has come out at approximately
10-year intervals since 1948. Most recent was 1991. It provides rationale
and references for any changes tht have been made since the preceding
volume. The Committee also is responsible for an international reference
"World Fishes Important to North Americans." Both are available from AFS at
moderate cost.

Another reference frequently invoked : "The Native Freshwater Fishes of
North America," Chapter 29 in "Systematics, Historical Ecology, and North
American Freshwater Fishes," a book published by Stanford University Press
in 1992. Chapter was written by Rick Mayden (speaker at this year's
convention), Brooks Burr, Larry Page, and Robert Rush Miller.

Chris, thanks again for all of the information. In a twisted kind of way it
does make sense. It's too bad that there can't be a definitive reference
that is used by all and kept up to date, but I do understand the
prohibitive mechanics of doing so. Thanks again.
