Not a dumb question at all... A "Freshwater Reef" is a quick way to imply
that the system would be analogous to marine counterparts. It would include
a wide diversity of the aquatic life found in the system it represents. A
lot of work in the marine field has been done (albeit unintuitively for the
most part) by dragging in the rocks of the reef to function as the primary
filter of the tank.

Moontanman over there, he's been playing with it for years. In the last
couple 9 months, I've been trying to quantitatively study different types of
combinations of deep sand (3-4") and addatives/substrates with use of plants
in freshwater. I just began incorporating some live sand into my newest
system and see how different things proceed there (also took out a couple
components). Some other list members have been going by the quantitative
analysis done by Diana Walstad in her book "Ecology of the Planted
Aquarium". Definately a book to borrow and then buy if you decided to play
with these concepts.

And I hope you do... Cause the more, the merrier and the more quickly we can
work through the in's and outs :)

At this point, I just kinda let things go (with the inverts), but plan on
setting up some 10 gallons as culture tanks to see who's gonna do what the
best. Just all will take time. Oh, and some spousal manipulation ;)
