Hi All

This is your final boarding call for the Okefenokee Swamp expedition! We
will me assembling this Saturday in the lobby of the Jameson Inn in
Waycross, GA, at 9AM, and heading into the swamp for some serious
collecting. Many of us will be staying at that same motel the night before,
so look us up if you decide to join us. The campers in our party will be
staying nearby at the Laura Walker State Park.

I went down to Waycross over the weekend on a scouting run. I couldn't
resist doing a little sampling to see what was close by the town. I stopped
at Perch Creek, 17.5 miles west of Waycross (the opposite direction of the
swamp) on US Highway 82. I found pygmy killifish, juvenile pickerel,
bluespotted sunfish, banded sunfish, lined topminnows, and a beautiful
green colored sunfish that I couldn't ID (too far east for L. cyanellus
unless it's introduced). The gambusia were different than what I'm used to
seeing also. The upper bodies were blueblack. Not a bad sample for just a
few dips of the net. I found the carcass of a gator as well. Most of the
front half was gone, but judging from the length of the tail it must have
been about 2 1/2' long when it was alive. Hey, when you're alone, the dead
ones are the ONLY ones you want to find.

It's shaping up to be a great trip. Contact me if you need more info.

All The Best,

Steven A. Ellis
