They are nearly impossible to tell apart, aside from males defend nests, and
females have eggs come out of them.

Check closer, sometimes the eggs are very hard to see depending on the
substrate. The female, if there is one, should be hanging nearby. Mine
always seemed to form a loose pair bond that went on after the nesting was
done.
