Wasn't there a Shmendrick (sp?) in Peter Beagle's The Last Unicorn? He was
an aspiring sorcerer whose efforts usually went haywire or fizzled. Often he
had to muddle through ... to what? Well if you can find a copy it's a nice
winter evening's read.

Thank you for mention of the Red Dwarf. Never hear of it before - probably
just culturally deprived.
