I know luke collects them in the flint hills, which is
kind of an amazing habitat for them. The relief is
high enough so the streams would have enough flow, but
the area is fairly devoid of trees. I've caught
southern red belly dace in at least six different
states and there are subtle differences between them.
The ones from the Barren River area for example have a
broader black band. All of them show red coloration
at times through the year. The ones from sw ohio
seem to stay red all the time. I used to be able to
find them in several streams here, but development
(deforestation and siltation) has extirpated a couple
of the localities in just the last few years.
