Your reference to Indians in regard to bowfin reminds me of some things I
read about bowfins in South Louisiana. It is said that during dry seasons
the Indians used to dig them up out of the mud in the area that is now New
Orleans. The name "Tchoupitoulas" (a famous street in N.O.) may have come
from the Indian word for bowfin, and "choupique", the Cajun name for bowfin,
is a corrupted form of the word.
