I had planned to collect the silversides and took some precautions. When we
had one seine come up filled with them we didn't lift them out of the water.
I carefully scooped them up with my hands and placed them in a container of
water. I then put 11 of them in a cooler filled about 6 inched deep. Which
had more surface area then in a bucket. I added a little ice and closed the
cooler. Three hours later only two looked bad they were returned to the
river. When I got home about an hour drive several were showing a little
distress. I transferred the remaining 9 to a riffle tank and within and by
that night 4 had died, by the next morning 2 more also died. I think it was a
mistake to transfer them that fast since they were showing distress I didn't
worry about the temperature change. The 78 f in my basement and the 80 f
temps. outside were to great to be handling the fish. I'll let you know if
collecting them when the river, air and tank temps. are about the same if
that helps. They are a great looking fish.
