I have alsays had good luck with a heavy bleach solution. There comes up
point when the water feels slimy. That had always been more than enough to
disinfect anything I have.

I usually leave the tank full, the filter running (nothing living of course)
and dump the bleach in. I leave it in there for a couple days. Drain and
rinse thoroughly. Fill (and sometimes drain again) and dechlor.

There are other disinfectants out there that also work well. Nulvasin is one
that I have used, but bleach is old reliable in my book.
