We met Ron-in-the Paint Rock River during the Huntsville Convention and were
immediately impressed with his energy and enthusiasm. He was a non-stop
naturalist - sometimes working a small seine with his wife, sometimes the
large seines with groups of members, but always very interested in all the
species that were encountered. Ron was, however, a very prudent collector.
He released most of the fish that he personally caught and voiced concerns
about over-collecting and the taking of certain sensitive species. The
memory that stands out most for us, though, was the interest and
encouragement he showed in Heather Smith's herpetological activities.
Heather was only 13-in-the time but when he and she were discussing reptiles,
Ron treated her as a colleague. Shortly after the convention, Heather
learned that she was a new member in the Chicago Herpetological Society,
courtesy of Ron. For us, Ron Humbert was one of the highlights of that
convention.
