I've had 4 brand new plastic hydrometers, fresh off the shelf, just unwrapped, in the same tank without a single one reading the same thing! Variance was by 0.004.
Without a refractometer or a glass hydrometer to continually calibrate them against... They're really not all that reliable.
And even then... They still get air bubbles trapped.

Subject: NANFA-L-- Kinda OT- Salt
I have the crystal sea hydrometer and decided to test it for accuracy. I made a calibration solution as said on reefkeeping.com and found it to be 99% accurate. But when I added the correct dosage of Instan Ocean to my water change bucket I found the SG to be 1.010. Whats up with this? The person who wrote the article about calibration solutions has a Ph.D in chemistry, so I am not so quick to doubt him.
Thanks,
Andrew
