I figured out why there are no fishless pools around here to collect "bugs"
from. Many years a go they had a war with mosquitos, they drained all the pools
that dried up or dig ditches to connect them with bodies of water that didn't
go dry or dropped the water table so that the temporary bodies of water
wouldn't form. Permanent bodies of water were stocked with gambusia. I'm not sure
who won the war but there are still plenty of mosquitos to harass you
completely out of your mind in the warm months!
