Gary, as for the Greenside Darters, I hope you are prepared to maintain what
can be a very high maintenance fish. Greenside appear as though they will do
well in captivity, when over the long run, they seem to become thinner and
thinner, until they just sort of "disappear" from the aquarium. Even in the
best kept tanks, they can do this. I recommend lots of healthy live food,
bloodworms, glassworms, etc., very consistantly cool and clean water, along
with areas of the tank that are dimly lit, so that they may hide. These
darters seem to be a more "spasmatic" type of fish. Also, I would recommend
keeping them in with their own kind, and not fish who will readily out
compete them for food... ex.. Rainbow Darters, Creek Chubs, and other fast
moving minnows. As for the organisms that appear to be leaches, I would
first leave this alone, as it just may not be of harm to the fish, or it may
"go away".. I was never a "drug pusher" when it came to treatment, as often
the cure is worse than the disease!... HA!... I would be extreemly cautious
on useing any medications with this fish, as I have seen meds. of proper
choice seem to just "suffocate" these fish. I would try a mild salt bath, or
adding a little salt to the tank, as this has worked for me in the past.
That was a nice place you were in!... Not far from there, I used to display
a 7 foot long "Rocky River" aquarium in Game Keepers Lodge Restaurant,
featuring just such species. This tank was equiped with a chiller, and the
water a consistent 63 degrees. I don't have all the answers here, as I am
sure everyone has something that has worked for them, in keeping these fish.
I am just shareing with you what has worked from me through
observation...... Robert S. Carillio.... Ohio NANFA
