I have experienced both extraction methods. The first method (push the barb
thru and cut it off) I have used on myself a couple of times. The last time
I tried that, though, I broke the hook. When I went to the hospital, they
used the second method ( wrap hook with string and yank). They numbed me
pretty good, though, so I don't know which hurts less.
