their congeners." Congeners means members of the same genus (in this case,
Scaphirhynchus), which would be shovelnose and pallid. For maximum clarity I
should have said, "Juvenile Alabama sturgeon are virtually indistinguishable
from other juvenile Scaphirhynchus species."

And well you should. They're from 2 genera: Acipenser and Scaphirhynchus.
