I hadn't had a problem with madtoms in the past. By using sinking pellets
( they eat anything) they became less shy. With several months they were at
the surface feeding with whatever fish were in the tank. If sinking
pellets are not an option, how about the way it works in the stream. Try to
set its food under a small flat stone near its cave. Once the fish becomes
used to the tank I am sure the smell of food will bring Spicoli out even
further. Or become used to your scent , since you would have to get your
hands wet to do this. Good thing Spicoli will not get bigger than a foot.
