Todd,
I used to try keeping Brook Silversides back when I lived in my parent's home near Honeoye Lake, NY where I could catch them transport them home in 10 minutes and always lost them in a week or so as well. One thing I noticed was they would often stun themselves if startled by going airborne and bashing into the cover or tank rim. They always seemed to be eating fine and looked healthy right up to their demise. I can't help but think the flights had a cumulative and deadly effect.
