John,

There was a big craze about doing that to "treat" marine ich (amyloodinium) a few years back in the reefkeeping side of things. Must have worked it's way down to freshwater now. It's all one big anecdote to me :)

Do you see any "danglie" things hanging out the anus? Either clear or whitish? It looks far different than any normal stool. That would indicate some type of intestinal worm. It may or may not be too late for that particular fish if this is the case. I had purchased a rainbowfish once that had the same song and dance. He'd try to eat but just couldn't get himself to. It was too late for him, I had to euthenize after I tried quarantining him and drugging him exclusively... And then I saw them coming out of some of the other rainbows. Ugh.

I treated the whole system with Metronidazole (Aquatronics sells it as "Hex-A-Mit") and all symptoms ceased. I used the recomended dosage and soaked it into thawed brine shrimp instead of just dumping it into the tank. I would first look for the proper symptoms tho. I'm not a big advocate of dumping all sorts of chemicals into the tank just to see what they'll do. It took Bruce Hansen's good natured persistance on the RML list to get me to do it, even tho I was being smart about it lol :)

Someone is marketing a garlic treatment. Supposed to improve the
appetite. Add it to the food or directly to the water. Any one heard
anything about that or is it like ginko biloba supposed to immmprobe mi
brane powder?
