I set up a similar tank using a desk top model (which are virtually useless
for fish except Heterandria formosa), and I stocked it with many small
aquatic beetles, water boatmen, caddis fly larvae, stone fly larvae, and
damselfly larvae. I also had some small pill clams and freshwater mussels.
Many snails from nearby creeks and ponds. I really enjoyed that tank. I
had to make many collecting trips to maintain enough food for the
carnivores. It was fun.
I had a book when I was a child titled "The Glass Menagerie." It was a
children's book that detailed setting up such a tank, but it did so in story
form. If anyone can get that book I would be grateful.
I recently picked up "Field Guide to Lower Aquarium Animals" by Edward T.
Boardman, published in 1939. It is just about maintaining invertebrates in
aquaria. Great book!

I have just delegated an aquarium to freshwater inverts. The aquarium was
originally set up for native fish but I have recently moved all the fish
into
another larger tank (this one is 15 gal.) the tank is lighted by 175 watt MH
and has several emerged plants as well as a good underwater growth of moss
and some ferns. I hopefully will be able to get some Isopods, amphipods, and
dwarf crayfish. I can get ghost shrimp and clams. I have tried this before
and so far had no real luck, this time the tank has been established for
about 18 months and should have a good population of microscopic life as
well
as having lots of detritus. I'll let you know if this one works out.
