This is why education is so important. Too bad people are not as informed
about pet fish as they are cats or dogs. Just about everyone ( except some
of those in the news recently, CA and WI come to mind) know how large a cat
or dog will get, what it requires and how long it will live. Maybe the
easiest thing pet dealers could do is work with fish clubs ( instead of
against them since they generally think clubs take away business, in reality
maybe they do not want clubs teaching people proper fish care so uninformed
people come in a buy bags and bags of fish). Its probably not feasible to
have everyone who works at a pet shop , especially these new mega stores,
know everything about every specie. It would not be too hard however for
them to stress how letting a fish go in the wild is no different than
dropping the unwanted dog or cat off at the edge of town or on some
desserted road.
