Jeff,
I=92ve had similar pandemics happen twice, once I lost 5 topminnows =
within
minutes =96 I moved the sixth to another tank and still have it. Months =
later,
I lost several darters over a few days, one-in-a time. It was very =
weird.
Both times were after I added more fish from a different drainage into
established tanks.=20
I am not an expert, but my theory is that water conditions =
that
are not perfect cause the immune system to weaken, and make the fish
susceptible to bugs that would not normally harm a healthy fish. Sort of
like a person with an immune system disorder dying from a cold or flu. =
So I
feel that there are different strains of bugs out there that fish will
normally shrug off but end up succumbing to in a weakened state.=20
I think the best thing to do is to keep up with the water
changes, possibly doing daily partial water changes for a while just to =
make
sure that all the parameters are moderated, especially nitrates and
phosphates. Also, some municipal water systems have nitrates =96 the =
legal
limit is 10ppm leaving the water plant for most states. So you may want =
to
occasionally check the incoming water!
I=92ve tried some of the various antibacterial and anti-fungal =
treatments, but
all I=92ve accomplished is making the fish die slowly. Try a google =
search for
=93old tank syndrome=94 and read some of the articles online; most of =
the info
is for less advanced aquarists, but there are some interesting =
discussions
of similar catastrophes.
