When buying bait fish, it's some what common to get different species mixed
in. I have gotten sticklebacks, bullheads and others in with my shiners. I
don't know if the mix up was at the hatchery or if the bait was netted from
a local lake and the non-target fish where not properly culled, before
selling to the bait shop.

Subject: NANFA-- Keeping bait in aquaria

In an old edition of "Northern Fishes" that I have, the authors mention
madtoms being sold as bait. Has anyone ever seen or heard about this
anywhere else?
