While-in-the Convention this past weekend, I spoke with one of the DNR
representatives in attendance and was told that-in-least some the SC
Elassoma boehlkei site will soon be designated as a Heritage Trust Preserve
site. Currently this stream is not protected but in the near future, 400+
acres of it will be protected under the Heritage Trust Preserve Program.
All of this was done through the cooperation of the SC DNR, local landowners
and landowner associations, and the SC DOT, which is funding most of this
project. This will be a first for SC because in the past no site has been
designated as a HTP site solely for one species and this species just so
happens to be one that we are all interested in. Also, boehlkei were
thought to be extirpated from this area until several years ago when Fritz
suggested Dustin and I take a look. We found them and let Fritz know that
they were still around. This new site isn't yet on the DNR website but you
can read about the Heritage Trust Program-in-the following link.
